Here in the UK, we can never be sure what the summer has in store for us – will it be wall-to-wall sunshine or a stream of wet weekends? There’s only one way to guarantee yourself some warmth and that’s to jet off to sunnier climes. But you don’t have to go far… Here are our favourite 7 must-see short-haul destinations for 2016 that won’t break the bank!
1. Corsica, France
Take your pick of beaches in this Mediterranean island, which belongs to France but is closer to Italy. Fine sand, coarse sand, golden sand or pebbles – there are so many beaches and coastal paths to explore, with regular dips into a crystal-clear turquoise sea. There are secluded spots, bustling towns and a wide range of water sports to enjoy.
2. Lopud, Croatia
The Croatian coast is scattered with the Dalmatians, a collection of islands with some jaw-droppingly beautiful beaches. A few of the islands are overpriced but there are still many areas, like Lopud, which offer great value for money. Take a trip to nearby Dubrovnik for a memorable Game of Thrones walking tour, the set for the show’s Kings Landing scenes.
3. Ulcinj, Montenegro
Head south down the coast from Croatia and you’ll find Montenegro, an increasingly popular beach holiday destination for those in the know. There are miles of sandy beach at Velika Plaza, just south of the town of Ulcinj. You won’t find many Brits there, but you will find rock-bottom prices for accommodation and food and drink.
4. Qawra, Malta
If you’re ready for something new on holiday, Malta has something for everyone; fine beaches to laze in the sun, unbeatable restaurants and great nightlife in St Julians. If you fancy the odd day trip, there are impressive cities and historical sites to explore, or treat yourself to some amazing scuba diving in the shimmering blue sea.
5. Barcelona, Spain
Spain’s coastal resorts have a lot to offer, but you don’t know the country until you’ve been to this thrilling gem of a city. Miles of unspoilt golden beaches combine with a booming city centre packed with bars, restaurants and picturesque cobbled alleys to make the perfect short break destination.
6. Koufonisia, Greece
If you’ve ever wondered where the Greeks go on holiday, look no further: Koufonisia is a top choice for Athenians looking to avoid the crowded, overpriced resorts catering to foreign tourists. Koufonisia is made up of two tiny islands tucked between Naxos and Amorgos. The sea is an amazing colour, the sand is silky and white and the drinks are reasonably priced – what more could you ask for?
7. Bodrum, Turkey
Gorgeous beaches, palm trees and a laid-back vibe mean this town is the place for some serious relaxation. Formerly a fishing village, the town is topped with an impressive castle and has lots of meandering back streets to discover, ornamented with summer flowers against the white-painted houses. After dark, the place comes alive with a selection of nightclubs that will keep you dancing until dawn.
