Older women are having to pay more for car insurance as statistics show that once they pass the age of 60 they are increasingly responsible for claims, it has been reported.

Guardian Money revealed that private data held by insurers shows that men have a worse accident record that women until their 60s, but once women reach their 80s they make far more car insurance claims.

According to the newspaper, some insurers are requesting that women pay 50 per cent more for car insurance than men once they reach the age 75.

Once they hit 80, they are being charged 100 per cent more, the figures showed.

There are currently many more older women drivers on the roads, which licence statistics from the Department for Transport showing that 36 per cent of licence holders are women over 70, compared to just 20 per cent in the 1990s.

A recent report by the Institute of Advanced Motorists found that motorists over 70 are considerably safer drivers than people in their teens and 20s.
