Motorists should look for a model in a lower car insurance bracket when they are buying a new vehicle in order to save money, according to an expert.
Neil Greig, director of policy and research at the Institute of Advanced Motorists, said that most new models should display this documentation, so it is easy to tell which vehicles are likely to cost you more to insure.
Taking advanced driver training is another way to reduce the cost of insurance premiums, he added.
"Do things that make it less easy to steal," he advised, suggesting that people tell their car insurance companies if they have a garage and make sure that their vehicle is parked in it.
Mr Greig also recommended fitting a Thatcham alarm, as this is the research body that sets the standard for alarm systems.
Recent research from Consumer Intelligence found that insurance premiums have risen by 19.6 per cent in the past year.
