Car insurance policyholders wanting to buy a new vehicle may want to opt for the Volkswagen Golf VI as it has been named the safest model of 2009.
EuroNCAP has revealed its top five safest cars of last year based on them receiving the maximum five-star award as well as their overall score.
Alternative to the Golf, car insurance policyholders may want to be tempted by the Honda Insight, Toyota Prius and Hyundai i20, which also made the top five.
The Toyota Avensis, Volvo XC60 and Vauxhall Astra shared fifth place.
"Even though these cars excel in different areas of safety, their presence in the top-five list indicates that they are among the top safety achievers of the year," said Dr Michiel van Ratingen, secretary general of Euro NCAP.
However, car insurance policyholders may want to avoid the Suzuki Alto and the Toyota Urban cruiser as these achieved the poorest results in Euro NCAP's testing.
Motorists may also want to consider the Honda Jazz as this has been named the best car for retaining its value in Parker's annual depreciation report.
