Alonso wins first Formula One race of season

15 Mar 2010

Posted by Dan Winters

Fernando Alonso has won the first Formula One race of the season, in his debut for Ferrari.

The driver was victorious in the Bahrain Grand Prix helping to create a Ferrari one-two victory, with him and teammate Felipe Massa beating Sebastian Vettel for Red Bull, who lead the way at the start of the race.

Until lap 34 the German driver was leading, after which he suffered some technical problems, thought to be spark plug failure, which led Alonso to overtake him.

Massa than passed Vettel on lap 35, but was beaten to the top spot by some rapid laps from Alonso.

Among the three new teams Lotus had a victory, being the only one to have both cars complete the race, with Heikki Kovalainen placing 15th and Jarno Trulli coming in 17th.

This race was the first with new rules, which include no fuel stops being allowed and keeping qualifying tyres for the first part of the race.
