UK cyclist casualty rates 'continue to rise'
03 Feb 2012
People with car insurance policies have been urged to take more care while behind the wheel in order to improve cyclist safety.
This is after the Department of Transport revealed that the number of cyclist casualties recorded across the UK has increased by 17.5 per cent between 2007 and last year.
According to the motoring organisation, there were 14,540 accidents involving cyclists between January and September 2011, which is up from the 12,373 casualties reported in the same period in 2007.
Neil Greig, director of policy and research at the Institute of Advanced Motorists, noted: "It is extremely concerning that cyclists' casualties are not reducing and this is something the government and local councils must act on.
"This will mean changes to road layouts, more cycle training and promoting better awareness among drivers."
In order to cut the risk of incident over the winter weeks ahead, motorists may want to invest in some cold weather tyres, as the products feature a rubber design which hardens in low temperatures to enhance grip on icy routes.
