Plans to tighten rules on road works to benefit car insurance holders?

10 Mar 2010

Posted by Michael Brown

All road works will have to meet strict rules on safety to improve conditions for car insurance policyholders under new government plans.

Transport minister Sadiq Khan announced proposals which outline that councils carrying out works will have to abide by the same rules as utility firms.

Currently, companies have to provide clearly-signed information, including a contact telephone number and details of who is doing the works.

In addition, anyone carrying out operations would have to meet tougher standards on safety for disabled people under the new plans.

"It is not acceptable for works to be badly signed, left in a dangerous state or put in place without a thought for the needs of road users, particularly people with disabilities," Mr Khan said.

The government has also proposed new equipment requirements to improve the safety of both car insurance policyholders and workers.

It follows plans to increase the maximum penalty for overrunning road workers to £25,000 from £2,500.
