The vast majority of car insurance policyholders support the introduction of a drug-driving law similar to the legislation on alcohol, according to a survey.
At the moment, a drug-driver can only be prosecuted if the police have evidence that he orshe was driving badly, rather than if they have simply got behind the wheel under the influence of impairing medication or banned substances.
However, 92 per cent supported the introduction of a drink-driving-style law. The research also found that car insurance policyholders are overwhelmingly in favour of lowering the drink-drive limit.
According to the survey, 71 per cent believe the current maximum of 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood should be reduced.
"It's time for bold action by policymakers to demonstrate they are listening to public concerns on drink and drug-driving," said Cathy Keeler, deputy chief executive of Brake, which conducted the research.
The news follows Lord Adonis' revelation on the BBC's Andrew Marr show that the government is seriously considering lowering the drink-drive limit.
