How many drivers are aged 80 or over?
14 Feb 2012
The number of car insurance policyholders in the UK aged over 80 years old has now topped one million, new research looking into the current motoring trends has revealed.
Information obtained by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) from the DVLA found that 1,012,399 drivers have enjoyed their 80th birthday.
Furthermore, 65,896 are aged over 90 years old, 122 are at least 100 years old and one motorist is still behind the wheel at the age of 106.
Such findings could be helping to make the UK's road network safer though, with further data revealing that the rate of deaths and serious injuries as a result of a car crash is three times lower with drivers aged over 80, when put in relation to those between 17 and 19 years old.
Simon Best, chief executive of the IAM, commented: "Those who wish to continue driving beyond the age of 70 should only be prevented from doing so if there are compelling reasons."
Recently, the IAM called for drivers and their passengers to challenge one another to wear their seatbelt every time they participate in a road trip.
