Govt proposes new financing to improve conditions for car insurance holders

Transport minister Sadiq Khan has challenged local authorities to develop bold strategies to improve conditions and safety for car insurance policyholders.

He was speaking at an event in London to launch the Urban Challenge Fund, a new financing scheme designed to support measures to improve transport for car insurance policyholders.

Under the proposals, cities would have to apply for the money and demonstrate that their plans will tackle congestion, improve safety and lower carbon emissions, among other things.

"The last decade of record investment has delivered thousands of infrastructure improvements, both big and small, in our towns and cities up and down the country. But we can do more," Mr Khan said.

Local authorities will be invited to comment on the proposals which were outlined in a discussion paper published by the government.

The news follows the Mr Khan's announcement that the government plans to increase the penalties for overrunning roadworks from £2,500 to £25,000.
