France to introduce new breathalyser rule
21 Feb 2012
Car insurance policyholders could find themselves in a spot of bother if they fail to carry a breathalyser kit when travelling in France later this summer.
The European country is introducing a new law from July 1st, in which every motorist driving in the nation will need to have these items in their vehicle.
Such a regulation will apply to every driver, whether they are from France or a foreign tourist, and will result in an €11 (£9.19) fine for anyone who does not comply with the rule from November.
A single-use breathalyser kit costs between £1 and £2 and will be available from ferry and tunnel terminals in French and British ports.
Neil Greig, director of policy and research at the Institute of Advanced Motorists, commented: "The new French rule is a genuine attempt to reduce the number of alcohol related-accidents."
Recently released figures from the Association of Chief Police Officers highlighted that over 7,100 motorists were arrested in the UK over the festive period due to driving while under the influence of drink or drugs.
