Car insurance holders advised to keep calm if gas pedal sticks

04 Feb 2010

Car insurance policyholders should keep calm and remember to use their brake pedal if their accelerator sticks, a leading motoring organisation has said.

Stephen Mead, assistant chief examiner at the Institute of Advanced Motorists, said that car insurance policyholders often forget they can brake at the same time when the accelerator is stuck, a misconception brought on by panic.

His comments were in response to Toyota's announcement that over 180,000 of its vehicles in the UK are affected by the engineering defect.

He explained that the problem is not the disaster it sounds as drivers can still steer under the circumstances.

"Press the brake firmly, then the clutch, disengaging the power. In an automatic, drivers should brake, wait for a reaction from the vehicle and then put the car into neutral," Mr Mead advised.

He also recommended car insurance policyholders look into getting a recall as soon as possible.
