Car insurance customers 'racing against their satellite navigation system'
07 Sep 2010
New research has shown that more than 80 per cent of British car insurance holders are racing against their satellite navigation system.
Data from Manheim Auctions revealed that drivers are attempting to find a better route or reach their destination ahead of the time estimated by their mapping system.
Known as 'route racing', bored drivers have admitted to playing games in order to out-think their sat-nav by getting from A to B quicker than the machine predicts.
Craig Mailey, client services and marketing director for Manheim Auctions, said: "For motorists who use sat-nav purely as a guide and who already know how to get to their destination, game playing is something to pass the time."
He went on to say that route racing by trying to out-think the device rather than simply following the automated voice just goes to prove that no matter how good technology is today, it is no substitute for local road knowledge.
Recently, research by Sheila's Wheels found that men spend more time lost than women on the road, with males driving an extra 276 miles per year.
