West Yorkshire motor insurance customers urged to be 'horse aware'

07 Sep 2010

Motor insurance policyholders in Bradford have been warned by police to reduce their speed and consider the needs of horse riders on the region's roads.

West Yorkshire Police issued the warning after a number of complaints were received from riders in the area who had experienced "near misses".

In some cases, stirrups had been hit by passing vehicles as motor insurance customers drove too closely to the animal or at excessive speed.

Police Community Support Officer and Horse Watch Liaison Officer for Bradford South, Julie Hansord, said that drivers travelling at inappropriate speeds were a major issue facing horse riders.

"One of the worst problems is hearing a car speeding towards you or behind you. There is no excuse for bad or careless driving on West Yorkshire's roads," she added.

Meanwhile, in Derbyshire, a recent police crackdown on dangerous driving saw at least 70 car insurance customers fined or warned for their conduct in a single five-hour period.
