Thousands of motor insurance customers 'escape driving ban'

06 Sep 2010

A British driver who racked up 54 penalty points is just one example of the many potentially dangerous road users being allowed to keep their licence by the courts, highlighting the importance of motor insurance quotes.

According to the Daily Telegraph, a 27-year-old man from Teesside is one of more than 11,000 car insurance customers whose licences have not been revoked, despite having accumulated at least 12 points in the past year.

Of those motorists, 10,000 have reportedly been let off by the courts while a further 1,000 are still at large on UK roads because details of their disqualification failed to reach the DVLA.

Andrew Howard, head of road safety at the AA, told the news provider of his anger at the revelations.

"You are not talking about someone who as made one mistake - but four. If a quarter of motorists are getting let off, we seem to have forgotten [that] the purpose of the law is to inconvenience those who repeatedly break it," he said.

Last month, research from The Co-operative Financial Services suggested that, for one day, every week of the year, law-abiding car insurance customers are footing the bill for Britain's uninsured drivers.
