Only 1 in 8 car insurance policies cover road rage
02 Sep 2010
New research has revealed that only one in eight UK motor insurance policies extend their cover to incidents relating to road rage, which may encourage car insurance policyholders to search for quotes online.
According to financial research company Defaqto, 94 per cent of motor insurance policies do not currently offer any cover for road rage incidents, though there has been a slight improvement since 2005, when the figure was 99 per cent.
Benefit limits were found to range from £500 to £5,000 and usually cover costs incurred for professional counselling, while some policies offer additional benefit for physical assault.
Mike Powell, Defaqto's insight analyst for general insurance, added: "Exclusions include incidents caused by a relative or a person known to the policyholder, or incidents caused or contributed by anything said or done by the insured person or passenger in the car."
Last week, in an online poll conducted by the Institute of Advanced Motorists, 70 per cent of car insurance customers admitted that they regularly got angry with other road users.
