Car insurance customers 'still plagued by potholes'
08 Sep 2010
Britain's car insurance policyholders are still driving on roads littered with dangerous potholes, after a harsh winter, budget cuts and substandard repairs have done little to help the problem, it has been reported.
According to the Daily Telegraph, new research has found that nine out of ten UK councils believe the shortage of road maintenance funding to pose a threat to car insurance customers' safety.
The survey revealed, however, that the estimated time to clear Britain's carriageway maintenance backlog had fallen by 1.5 years since a 2009 study, though the accumulated total still stands at 11.5 years.
Duncan McClure Fisher, creator of potholes.co.uk, told the newspaper that, unless more public money was spent on road repairs, the problem could persist indefinitely.
"We have been suffering from a 'patch and mend' mentality for many years. Unless central Government puts more funding in to looking after the roads … the roads will never get any better," he explained.
Meanwhile, research by driving organisation the AA has revealed that a large proportion of drivers regularly avoid motorways when planning their journeys, as express routes are often a 'source of fear'.
