Car insurance customers 'face 59 traffic lights at one roundabout'
03 Sep 2010
Motorists in Southampton are being forced to negotiate 59 sets of traffic lights at one confusing roundabout, which could lead to an increase in road accidents and car insurance claims.
According to the Daily Telegraph, Southampton Council has plans to install more signals at the city's Millbrook roundabout, in a bid to ease traffic flow to a newly-constructed rubbish dump nearby.
Two years ago, 30 sets of lights were installed, at a cost of more than £2.5 million to taxpaying car insurance customers, though the number has doubled since then.
Martyn Rex, a regular commuter from the region, told the news provider that, although ten toucan crossings were included among the baffling array of traffic signals, the junction was very rarely populated by pedestrians.
"I sit at these lights twice a day, five days a week and I do not think I have ever seen more than a handful of people walking past," he explained.
This follows research by driving organisation the AA, which found that more than 600 extra miles were driven each year by car insurance customers opting to avoid busy motorways.
