Young motorists in Derbyshire will be able to get additional driver training at discounted price under a new scheme which will help them to save on their insurance premiums.
Derbyshire Dales District Council is part funding an incentive scheme so that the cost of a typical skills test will be reduced by 85 per cent.
The local authority will contribute £70 and the Derbyshire Road Safety Partnership will put forward £50 to subsidise each young driver and rider who joins the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) with the intention of being assessed.
Active membership of the IAM or the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents can cut the cost of car insurance.
Nick Eyley, 24, has saved £305 on car insurance premiums since joining the IAM in the summer of 2008 and is now the ambassador for young and inexperienced drivers in the Derbyshire Dales.
Drivers aged between 17 and 24 have seen the cost of their cover rise by 24.7 per cent over the last year, according to figures from Consumer Intelligence.
