Toyota confirms that recall will not affect car insurance

Toyota has reassured owners of its models that their car insurance is unaffected by the current safety recall.

The maker said that it had received confirmation from the Association of British Insurers (ABI) that motor insurance policies will continue to cover Toyota owners whose vehicles have been recalled.

"Any claims will be dealt with in the normal way, in accordance with the terms and conditions of the policy," the ABI said in a statement.

The organisation also urged motorists who think their vehicle might be affected by the accelerator problem to contact their local Toyota dealer and follow their advice.

Last week, the carmaker confirmed that over 180,000 are subject to the pedal defect and will therefore have to be removed from the roads.

The company said it was working with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency to inform owners with affected models so that they can return them to their local Toyota dealer as soon as possible.
