Tips for drivers following a road incident

03 Feb 2012

Car insurance policyholders have been advised on how they should react after being involved in a road accident, in order to avoid encountering further problems.

Simon Elstow, a driver training specialist at the Institute of Advanced Motorists' Drive & Survive scheme, has encouraged drivers to report the incident to their insurance company as soon as possible.

Furthermore, photographs of the accident should be taken where possible, to present as evidence if the need arises, while the police only need to be called should there be an injury or accusation of dangerous driving.

Those involved in the incident should also swap full insurance company details, as well as name, address and vehicle details.

Mr Elstow acknowledged: "The reality is nobody wants to think about having a car accident. But it's important to be prepared in case you are involved in one. And if it happens, try not to get angry or upset."

Earlier this week, the Highways Agency urged motorists in the UK to take care when getting behind the wheel in the coming days, with sub-zero temperatures expected to grip the nation.
