People with car insurance are paying for those who go without

03 Oct 2008

An expert has reminded motorists those who "comply with the law" are subsidising drivers who are not, it has been reported.

The Association of British Insurers has commented on the problem of uninsured drivers, in that it is not "a victimless crime".

A spokesperson from the organisation said he believed people who do not pay their car insurance are increasingly aware law-abiding individuals are having to pay high premiums as a result.

He said the association believed measures to counter-act the number of uninsured motorists in the UK to be long overdue due to the problems they cause.

"It increases danger on the roads, as uninsured drivers are much more likely to be involved in accidents, more likely to be drink driving, and more likely to be driving an un-roadworthy vehicle," the representative pointed out.

The Guardian today (October 3rd) urged customers not to risk "ditching" essential costs such as car insurance in order to save money during the current economic downturn.
