People 'think they can get away with driving without car insurance'

02 Oct 2008

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) believes one of the reasons for people driving without car insurance is because motorists "think they can get away with it".

A spokesperson for the representing body of the UK's insurance industry has said the issue has been a problem over the years and there is now a "vigorous" system in place to come down on hard on offenders.

He said another factor in the high number of uninsured drivers was a historical record of low detection and "penalties [having been] and still to some extent remain, disproportionate to the crime".

On the subject of the current economic crisis and what part it has to play in the number of lawbreakers, he said the problem still existed "before the credit crunch was even seeped into English language".

He added one in 20 motorists is estimated to be driving without car insurance and the "honest majority" is consequently bearing the cost of this.

In other news, the West Yorkshire Police announced they had seized seven vehicles due to them not being insured in a recent crackdown.
