Drivers warned of crushing cost of avoiding car insurance

22 Feb 2010

Motorists in St Helens are being warned to ensure they have car insurance and tax or face having their vehicles seized and crushed.

Police conducted a demonstration in Four Acre Lane, Clock Face, in which they crushed two cars, an off-road motorbike and a scooter, that they had seized following concerns from residents about speeding drivers, abandoned cars and youths riding two-wheelers in built-up areas.

Sergeant Andrew Rankine, from the dedicated neighbourhood policing team for Sutton, said that the aim was to send a clear message to motorists that they cannot get away with neglecting to purchase car insurance or tax their vehicle.

"Not only is driving without insurance or car tax highly irresponsible and illegal, it is often the case that criminals do not bother to insure or tax their cars," he added.

Recent research by RoadTestReports.co.uk found that 39 per cent of drivers would sneak away from an accident to avoid the risk of having to make a claim on their car insurance.
