'Distracting speed cameras leading to accidents, increased car insurance'

30 Jun 2008

Over half (53 per cent) of Britain's drivers claim they are being distracted by speed cameras, which could be leading to more road accidents and higher car insurance, research indicates.

A poll by RoadPilot also shows 52 per cent of motorists believe warning signs to inform them where the devices are positioned are inadequate and 30 per cent always brake when they see a camera, onlyfinance.com reports.

The website suggests these results are a "concerning development" as drivers are paying more attention to where cameras are than other cars.

It claims drivers in Essex have complained local police are hiding behind cameras, sheltered by other vehicles.

Meanwhile, it was revealed recently that police in nearby Suffolk have seized 585 vehicles in the county due to drivers having no car insurance.

A further 231 are said to have been confiscated due to the dual offences or driving without car insurance and a licence.
