What changes are being planned for learner drivers?

20 Feb 2012

Worries have been raised regarding allowing car insurance policyholders to use the UK's motorway network while learning to drive.

The Road Haulage Association (RHA) has pointed out that the proposals to alter the practical driving test could soon become a reality.

Geoff Dunning, the chief executive of the RHA, believes that such a plan "raises many concerns" but that safety on the UK's road network as a whole should be of "paramount importance".

He therefore explained: "While we are not in favour of learners drivers using the motorway prior to their test, we would welcome the introduction of formal motorway training by a qualified instructor before new drivers venture out unsupervised."

Another proposal being considered is to make it mandatory that green P-Plates are worn on the vehicles of newly qualified drivers, something which Mr Dunning backs.

Many changes have already been made to the driving examination over the past few months, including learner drivers having to take part in some independent driving during their practical test.
