Car insurance policyholders who own Toyotas should be aware that the Japanese has firm announced it is recalling thousands of models due to an accelerator pedal defect.

There are over 180,000 vehicles affected and the carmaker has released details of these to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency.

The two organisations are now working together to identify and contact car insurance policyholders whose Toyotas may be defective as quickly as possible.

Models across seven Toyota ranges, including the iQ, Aygo, Yaris, Auris, Corolla, Avensis and Verso are affected.

Car insurance policyholders whose model has a defect in the accelerator pedal which causes it to stick can take it to a Toyota-approved service centres for repair.

"The safety of our customers is our top priority. We appreciate their concerns and are doing everything we can to deliver a speedy and thorough solution to the issue with the minimum inconvenience," said Miguel Fonseca, managing director of Toyota GB.

Meanwhile, the Institute of Advanced Motorists has advised car insurance policyholders to keep calm if their accelerator pedal sticks.
