How do you react to a hazard on the road?
17 Feb 2012
Car insurance policyholders are likely to come across a hazard most days that they are on the road.
As a result, Simon Elstow, the head of training at the Institute of Advanced Motorists' (IAM's) Drive & Survive scheme, is giving advice on how to anticipate such problems and dealing with them correctly and safely.
For one, the expert recommends drivers' plan ahead and look for hazards well in advance, so that a potential problem is not a surprise.
Warning signs above a motorway are telling signs that an incident has occurred in front, while observing the actions of nearby motorists should allow people to avoid an accident themselves.
"Hazards can be anything from a tree branch to a child walking along the pavement. Anticipating what other road users might do is key to being prepared and becoming a safer driver," Mr Elstow also advised.
Meanwhile, the Highways Agency has set up a new campaign which is encouraging drivers to 'Bag it, Bin it!' in order to keep the UK roads tidy and appealing.
