Car insurance customers urged to check tyres for safety

24 Aug 2010

Motor insurance policyholders planning to make the most of the August Bank Holiday have been reminded to check their tyre pressures before hitting the road.

According to TyreSafe, pressures should be checked at least once a month or prior to any long journey and should be adjusted to suit any additional loads being carried.

The company warned that car insurance customers travelling on under-inflated tyres were much more likely to suffer a blowout, endangering themselves, their passengers and other road users.

Stuart Jackson, chairman of the company, said: "Although they may only be going away for a few days, many drivers fill their car with passengers, luggage and additional items such as bikes, all of which can seriously impact on their tyres' performance."

He added that, unless tyre pressures were checked properly, the additional load could make a puncture or blowout "much more likely".

Earlier this month, road safety charity Brake urged car insurance customers not to drive while feeling sleepy, after a survey revealed that almost three-quarters of motorists had made a tired journey in the past 12 months.
