Are female drivers truly the better gender behind the wheel?

30 Jan 2012

The age-old argument that women car insurance policyholders are better drivers than their male counterparts may now have proof to back it up.

A study devised by professional driving instructor Neil Beeson suggested that female motorists are more adept at manoeuvring into a parking space than males.

Upon analysing car parks across the UK, the research highlighted that women are more likely to leave their vehicle in the middle of a parking bay.

Furthermore, females were more prone to using the tactics for reversing into a bay that they learnt from their driving instructor.

Male car insurance policyholders were found to be more skilled when it came to driving forwards into a space though, as well as generally opting not to reposition their vehicle once it was inside a bay.

Mr Beeson commented: "In my experience men have always been the best learners and usually performed better in lessons.

"However, it's possible that women have retained the information better."

A separate study conducted by the Institute of Advanced Motorists, entitled The Fast and the Curious: Young People's Attitudes to Driver Training, found that 62 per cent of young male novice drivers feel they are better behind the wheel than the average motorist.
